Third hunt at new site and targets are thinning out:(. Ive also begun to realize Im not going to find much beyond about 2-3 feet of water. Any deeper and the bottom is unfortunately covered with a dense mat of mussels with no signals to be found. I continued to find a ton of fishing sinkers, old lead, a few buttons and 4-5 spent indians. Weird that most of the finds are either early colonial or late 19th century with nothing in between. Highlights were 1719 KG. Ive found around 50 colonial coppers but rarely with a date. Also got another coin weight so quite a bit of money was likely changing hands here. Really hope I can get permission for the field behind the beach. I have dreams of tree coins and colonial gold

Thanks. You most likely have to be on an early site to find them and we all know how hard it is to find early sites. When milled coinage began to circulate, it eliminated the need to weigh heavily clipped cobs and other hammered silver and gold

Yes but they dont turn up much on later sites over here thus not used as much. The reeded edge on milled coins pretty much put an end to clipping. Later weights were primarily used for unfamiliar foreign coinage and bullion. Others were used for pharmaceuticals and other commodities

I believe they were used to control the milled counterfeits as well. I have never found one in North America. Got only one on my trip in Europe.

Id really like to find a milled counterfeit. Those aren’t flying out of the ground either
