This morning I got out for a little bit and found a King George copper and some other keepers. I took pics before I conditioned the coin with Blue Ribbon and after. The blue ribbon takes all the dirt off and is suppose to seal the coin in a wax like substance so it will be preserved without further damage. I don't know if it brings out more detail in the coin but I believe it prevents further damage far more superior than coin care in my opinion. Thanks for looking and HH. Love the Georgies!

PS.... There's no further damage that can occur so do whatever makes the coin look the best!

I used Blue Ribbon on the KGIII Irish in my post today, but I actually prefer the wax over the Blue Ribbon and I have been using Blue Ribbon on buttons and coins for about ten years now. My son says Blue Ribbon is getting hard to find and the price if you do find it is way out of line. I think once this bottle is gone I will just use the wax..

Congrats on a decent cornfield copper, cornfields and coppers usually are not a good combo........

I dream of King George copper :notworthy: I must say that it is at the top of my list.

Thanks for posting the before and after pics. After cleaning I use vaseline on my coins and some buttons. Should I be using somthing like Blue Ribbon or is mostly just a personal preference thing?

Thanks Iron Patch I haven't been doing this that long so I don't have copper coins that Ive dug 20 years ago to see if they further deteriorate. Im just going on what Ive read. www.pcgs.com/articles/article1328.chtml I know this article talks about new copper but I guess I assumed the same applied to dug copper. :dontknow:

There's really no point in trying to apply the rules of dug coins vs non dug because they are far too different. There is definitely nothing to worry about for a decent dug copper coin and like a relic a nice green patina is what can make it! Why would the rules be different for dug coins and relics? I don't think you see too many people stripping the patina off a relic and applying wax of greasing it up. Note I said stripping the surface like in the coin above which is different than items that are dug in very good condition and the green color is more in the metal than corrosion on the surface. It's definitely a case by case basis but if it's not iron or pewter which does have to be sealed, it's all about the looks! I only wish some of my 10 year old coppers could grow back their patina I wiped away, but unless I want to bury them it ain't gonna happen. And the ones I greased up, well probably not a chance for those no matter what. I do clean lots of my finds, well pretty much all.... have to, but it's a matter of making the right choice for that item's condition and not just following any general rules. (because there are none)

I'd gladly trade my 50 (or whatever the count is) for that Blacksmith you dug! I'd probably throw in my Fall ones too because chances are none will be anywhere close to that.

There is lots to learn. Just take your time on your finds because if you're digging Georgies you never know what you'll turn up! Eye appeal alone can make a huge difference in the value of a great find.

The Blacksmith Token is a perfect example of when NOT to clean.

;D

WEll... I will have to disagree with you on that because I am quite sure I could have that one looking very sweet! (and more valuable) The surface is very good, and cleaning will show just how strong the detail really is. (which is great for a blacksmith) The Blacksmith and George copper above are very different.
