I cannot believe how the clay at the bottom of Lake Champlain preserves coins. Rescued a couple of hours ago...

She was in about 5 feet of water and about 4 inches in a mixture of clay and sand. I was snorkeling. The location was about 50 feet from this rocky point which acted as a barrier to the lake's normal flow. This allowed some sand to accumulate in an area that is normally 100% clay. I pulled a couple of coins from the clay (~0.5 in in the clay) nearby and posted them the day before...

They come out completely "cleaned", whereas this large cent has some darkening to it.

that's a nice find. I hunt on the Vermont side of lake champlain and have read
you can't take anything out of the water. not sure about the shoreline.

Beautiful coin and find. I have pulled two out of one spot. An 1825 and an 1827. Both are in beautiful shape although the 25 is better, Sand and clay are nice to coppers and you have found a spot I would love to dive in. Great underwater find!

Outstanding specimen. Jersey soil not only acts a sandpaper, but also has a acidic property, which causes old coppers to just corrode.
