I decided to hit a new area with the Deus at an old location, and boy I'm glad I did! Judging from the dates of the coins and types of finds, I'm thinking this site was some sort of camp circa 1850 (with some early 1900s finds scattered in there). I'm thinking camp cause of the spoons and density of the finds. My finds over the last three day included spoons and pottery galore, a pair of sterling salt and pepper shaker lids, 2 buttons, 7 large cents, 1 v-nickel, 4 flying eagle cents, multiple buckles, lead ID tag with hand carved letters, hand drill, and some items I cannot identify but look hand-made and old. Excellent variety of finds! The "T" handled tool is a gimlet often used to remove broken fuses from a cannon vent hole. These are the same as the common woodworking gimlet but I find it interesting that you also found an artillery cap badge there. I think you have reason to believe it was dropped by an artilleryman.

Is that what it is? Stone drain field? I thought it was a foundation at first with a hearth. But after examining the stone structure saw there was no ventilation. How did the structure work? When do You think it was built?

So would it be safe to say this site was some sort of military camp?

I have been looking around on the net and the crossed cannon insignia like yours are listed as a early 1900's collar insignia of the Coastal Artillery. I searched 125th Coastal Artillery and found a 125th Coastal Artillery unit at Fort Trumbull CT in 1902. You may have two camps there of some sort mixed together. The buckle parts look to be from a webbed cartridge belt but I haven't found a model that matches yet.

Thanks for the info steve! Do you think there were two different camps at this one location at two different time periods?

Wow any one of those coins would constitute an amazing find. The pin is the winner for me though. Congrats on finding a nice old "playground", I hope it'll produce many more finds for you

It really looks like you have a really nice place to detect for a period of time to come, you got a great assortment of finds from the hunts. Liking the coinage and the badge, and the shaker lids are two nice finds. The lead piece with the inscribed name does it read Jose Manuel?

I think you're correct looks like Jose Manuel to to me. It has a hole in the top like it was meant to be hung or attached to something. I find it odd that it's made of lead. I've found plenty of tags but never and hand carved lead piece

You are welcome! It is certainly a possibility to have more than one camp at a given location, I have run into this in the past on a few occasions. Please keep us posted on future findings.

Amazing finds. Congrats! Could we see some pictures of your coins, close up? Never seen 4 flying eagle cents together in one place! Hope you're able to clean that place out and find some more great stuff before the ground freezes up. It's already turning to concrete here in MA.

Before I found this site I've never even found a flying eagle, let alone four! They still need more time in peroxide but here is the close up. Two 1857 and two 1858. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1420248511.224098.jpg
