Just a though, you can get a "magnet sweeper" at harbor freight fairly cheap. I used to have one for cleaning up dropped nails from jobsites. If you make a few passes over an area where everything is loose you may be able to get quite a bit of the old nails out of your way and make detecting the ashes a little easier



edit.... just noticed the original post is 2007.... still a magnet sweeper would be handy if anyone else ever gets a site like this to hunt
