I have to start with a tip of the hat to my hosts, Relic Nut & Damnails, two of the nicest gentlemen that you would ever want to randomly meet on the internet. They took good care of us. Fellow TNetter Locodigger and I met in Virginia at RN’s hunting camp. It had hot water and electricity, but zero cell coverage for 3 days. They communicate via radio. My radio was still at the store. It was awesomely remote. I saw a wild turkey walk through the yard. The food was excellent too.
I could go on and on, but I know you just want to see the goodies. We went to several places, all were beautiful and some very remote, behind gates up in the mountains. This was an old house site, it was as nice a place as I’ve ever hunted.
I scored a buffalo, and a bit later, these two Indians within a foot of each other.
OK, here is the good stuff. We set out the first day to a known Union camp. First we hit the hill where the enemy target practiced, they call it Welfare Hill, because it hands out freebies! We each dug 4 bullets, then moved on to the camp, so as not to exhaust the bullets on the hill. Within the first half hour we had our 4 fired bullets! So you start with something in your pouch, first thing in the morning. These dudes were smarter than they looked.
The field was full of sheep and baby lambs. They were really cute, but we were there to hunt, not pet lambs. Well except Damnails, seen below lamb whispering.
Here is our boy Relic Nut. I believe he is retrieving a target, but I’m not sure...
It was awesome. Here is the lead I was able to find. This is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to hunt CW relics, and I was just in awe.
I also dug this chewed up eagle I coat button.
I saved the best for last.
I arrived early at the rendezvous spot and cleverly tricked old RN into taking me out for a little, one hour preview hunt, no big deal. I got him to take me to the place, that he said had “done been a hunted” a hundred times. Site of an old nail factory apparently. It took me 40 minutes to find this button! His face turned red and he said we had to go after that.
It’s a staff officers domed eagle button, with lots of gilt left.
Just as I started the post, I’ll finish it. I have to thank my hosts, I really had fun guys, I can’t thank you enough for the memories. The stuff is cool, the people are what it’s about. It’s tough to find like minded gentlemen of integrity.
Thanks for looking and good luck on your hunts.
