I found an old button the other day at an early school. The school opened in the early 1900's. I have found several items there from early twentieth century. When I got home and cleaned it up, it is engraved with a star and a rose. My first thought was of the song “TheYellow Rose Of Texas”. I posted pictures of it on “treasurenet” to try to find out something about it. It is either a button or the front portion of a cuff link.

No one could give me info on it, but the first person that responded said, “I don't know anything about the button, but to me it just screams The Yellow Rose OF Texas.”

All of my life I have heard and sung the song, but I had no idea what the song was about, I just thought it was a love ballad. So I googled “Association of Texas with a rose”.

There was pages and pages came up of the story of Emily West and the song “The Yellow Rose Of Texas”.

In the period the song was written, a yellow rose referred to a person of color that was a mulatto.

Emily West was a mulatto, an indentured slave working for a Captain Morgan. She was traveling on his behest on a ship that was captured in Texas by Santa Anna. She was held prisoner by Santa Anna’s troupes and when Sam Houston surprise attacked Santa Anna she was in bed with him, which prevented him from commanding his troupes and led to the defeat of his huge army of thousands by Houston's seven hundred men. And consequently in folk lore she is credited with freeing Texas.

Because of the racial overtones, the words of the original song were changed to the version that I had heard all of my life. Following is the the modern version and then the original version.

I don't know if you have ever seen or heard this story before, but it sure was a surprise to me. And no one that I have mentioned it to has ever heard this story and like myself had no idea what the song was about.

There's a yellow rose of Texas
That I am going to see
No other fellow knows her
No other, only me
She cried so when I left her
It like to broke my heart
And if I ever find her
We never more will part

She's the sweetest rose of color
This soldier ever knew
Her eyes are bright as diamonds
They sparkle like the dew
You may talk about your dearest May
And sing of Rosa Lee
But the Yellow Rose of Texas
Is the only girl for me

Where the Rio Grande is flowing
And the starry skies are bright
She walks along the river
In the quiet summer night
She thinks if I remember
When we parted long ago
I promised to come back again
And never leave her so

Oh now I'm going to find her
For my heart is full of woe
And we'll sing the song together
That we sang so long ago
We'll play the banjo gaily
And we'll sing the song of yore
And the Yellow Rose of Texas
Shall be mine for ever more

(original version)

There's a yellow rose in Texas, that I am going to see,
No other darky knows her, no darky only me
She cryed so when I left her it like to broke my heart,
And if I ever find her, we nevermore will part.
Chorus:

She's the sweetest rose of color this darky ever knew,
Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
You may talk about your Dearest May, and sing of Rosa Lee,
But the Yellow Rose of Texas is the only girl for me.

When the Rio Grande is flowing, the starry skies are bright,
She walks along the river in the quite [sic] summer night:
She thinks if I remember, when we parted long ago,
I promised to come back again, and not to leave her so.
[Repeat chorus]

Oh now I'm going to find her, for my heart is full of woe,
And we'll sing the songs togeather [sic], that we sung so long ago
We'll play the bango gaily, and we'll sing the songs of yore,
And the Yellow Rose of Texas shall be mine forevermore. [Chorus]

I certainly am no expert but it looks very close to some of the royal navy lieutenant tudor rose buttons from rev. war. Whatever it turns out to be, it looks old and very cool.
