I've used my bottle probe to locate cart paths on a site that led me to 2 foundation holes on a really grown over site. 10 minutes of random/educated guessing probes til a found a section, then just think like a wagon driver and start following a line. 2 15"-18" wide tracks where the probe would only go in 3-4" before significant resistance, versus sliding in like butter, just a few inches to either side.

I'd be willing to bet that a path to hard to locate privy might be found using the same technique. Family of 8-12 people using the same path several times a day for months...that ground's gonna be a LOT more compacted than just a few inches away on either side.
