Once you have a pretty good idea of the area that something happened in (like a minor battle), do you look for the nearest stretch of woods to try and find relatively undisturbed land, and then branch out from there? One of the problems I'm having is a lot of the sites I've hunted in the last few years always wind up being on seriously disturbed ground and I'm lucky if anything is left.

Shhhh Here's a little secret.
Don't tell anyone,

Try to locate where the soldiers camped before the battle. A short march from the battlefield 1/2 mile or so.
Usually near a creek or water supply typically a defensive position.
That's where you will make good finds since the soldiers would bury their valuables before going into battle.

Not that you wont find good relics on the battlefield but you will find better ones on the harder to locate less hunted out camp areas.

Don't tell anyone,

Buddy~
