Left the detector at home again and hit the beach where I found the barshot a couple weeks ago...first find of the day was a large headless sturgeon! Boat propeller or great white...take your pick!

Found a couple oldish bottles, an old hatchet head and a clay marble but nothing else. Headed further down the beach where i've found cannonballs in the past with my detector and decided to give my eyes a try. Sure enough, at the extreme low tide level I eyeballed this massive chunk of mortar with part of the fuse hole. I've found three other pieces of thi caliber in the same spot and two of them mate up.

When I got the piece home and was cleaning it off I found that it's actually marked! I large "2" and a small "3". I"ve found a lot of mortar frags and this is the first piece that's marked in any way. I'll have to do some research to determine what the marks mean. When complete this was a 13 inch ball and weighed in excess of 200 pounds. Sure enough, this piece mates with the other two pieces...almost have half the ball now!

That fish is cool. From the pic. looks like it was fresh enough of a kill you could have taken it home.

Hmmm. I wonder if there are enough of those around that you may be able to catch one on a rod ?
Did you ever try ? I seen them doing it in BC.

Yep, it was pretty fresh and I was tempted to slice off a couple steaks to pack home for the Bar-b...
