AT HEIN'S AUMSVILLE, OR OREGON SUPPLEMENT 1 (JULY 2001)
AT HEIN'S AUMSVILLE, OR OREGON BOOK
AT HEIN'S TONY, WI 2ND EDITION LUMBER BOOK
i have the lumber book it is listed as an rarity value 9 out of ten.
ttantow's lumber book has this to say: "John C. Hein, 1899-1921 sawmill, planing mill, shingles & lumber Co. 1915, Stave manufacturing, & Ag. implements 1921" these sound like reference info from dunn bradstreets business listings.
your post mention //1c. this is not on the listing in trantow book.
it would be neat to check someone having the oregon book to see what it might say.
GOOD FOR / 1 / IN / MERCHANDISE / AT / HEIN'S
1¢
18mm Rd Al
I suspect he may have attributed this one using:
CHAS. F. HEIN / AUMSVILLE, / OREGON
GOOD FOR 5 (also 25 & 50¢) / IN / MERCHANDISE
20, 28 & 30mm Rd Al
If that was the case and there are no other factors linking the maverick to the self-identified ones, then the attribution is iffy in my opinion.
Gross' Oregon Supplement lists a maverick:
GOOD FOR 5¢ / IN / MERCHANDISE / AT / HEIN'S
5¢
19mm Rd Al
Again, this may not be a good attribution.
I only have the first edition of Trantow's book and the piece is not listed in it.
My opinion is that there are a couple of possibilities for an attribution for this maverick, but I wouldn't hang my hat on either of them. The 1920 Census of the United States says that there were 6,189 men, women, and children with the last name Hein enumerated that year, so there probably other possibilities out there.
the wording AT HEIN'S 'is' very odd for a lumber token. 'iffy' is reasonable.
trantow's book had extensive research. attributions are rarely found wrong, though, of course, not impossible. can you imagine all the work that goes into a token book? the continuing research puts this in perspective.
sure would like to see a picture of the token.
i see the //1c probably refers to the reverse. sorry didn't catch that at first look.
