MD'ing is wrecking my career!

Ok this may sound very lame but this is actually a serious request for help. Hopefully I'm not the only one afflicted with this addiction.

I have been finding myself looking for any excuse possible to sluff-off work early to go MD'ing. It's gotten to the point where I think it may be affecting my job performance because I am literally obsessed with planning my next hunt. I find myself more interested in finding relics that have historical value rather than coin shooting - this in itself requires an enormous amount of time researching and scouting.

If anyone else is having this sort of problem, I could sincerely use your advice. Please no jokes...I honestly need help.

Thanks,

Pcola

Ditto for me....only about 6 weeks now and things at the house get neglected because I'm either out in my yard (which is too convenient) or on this site. Is there an MD Anonymus?

So what's the problem? Sounds normal to me.
You aren't the only one. Many here have jobs, families, etc. There are those lucky few that are retired that have a little more time, but they still have obligations to attend to. It's all in time management & put it in this perspective, without your work you can't play.

I do most my research in the winter - rainy days.

See if you can switch to the night shift and then seek treatment for sleep deprivation. Much easier to treat.

Re: MD'ing is wrecking my career!

When I was a state trooper I worked 11-7 and when I got home I went detecting for a few hours every day. That was in the 60's when silver was everywhere and thats as long as it took to fill two pockets to the limit. If you did SCUBA it was like robbing a jewelry store. Now that I am retired I get to go as much as I want and it is just as exciting now as it was back then. I guess you are just going to have to deal with it as it is an addiction ( better than booze or drugs though)

Re: MD'ing is wrecking my career!

Hi. I'm Diggins, and I am a MD addict. I know what you mean, I am thinking over as I type this, If I should call in on Monday or Tues. to hit the beach. I'd like to go tomorrow but it's Mother's day and all. So I guess ya know you got it bad when your trying to find time on Mother's day to sneak to the beach. hehe.

If I didn't need the paycheck or the benefits I'd be hunting every single day, dawn to dusk and researching dusk to dawn.

Just do it in moderation. That way ya keep the job and enjoy the times you do get out even more. And as HH said, "( better than booze or drugs though)".

Happy Hunting-

Just get up super early and get it out of your system before work starts.

Then you'll be spending the entire workday posting on Treasurenet like a right proper addict :D :D

Re: MD'ing is wrecking my career!

I know what you mean. It got to the point that I was planning a hunt all the time. This got to be real bad as I still work 40 hours a week. Now I limit it to 3 to 5 times a month. I still get too involved in the research when I find a good lead or source of information. Just limit your hunts as well as reaserch. When you research, do one site at a time. Remember all TH'ing and no working makes for a poor, poor, boy!

Re: MD'ing is wrecking my career!

Now I know you think this is serious problem, and for some people it probably is. You don't say what kind of work you do. I am in phone installation and repair, and for me, driving around the area all day is what I do. (have to get from one job to the other). Now I am sure the bosses want me focused on my job, and for most of the time I am. (sure I am.) Anyway over the past two weeks, I've found 3 parks that I never knew existed, and 5 other lots that have reached my potentiality meter. I've worked in this area for the past 15 years. My job is actually helping my MD possibilities.
Any way you can make MD'ing help you do your job better????

Re: MD'ing is wrecking my career!

Not kidding I use to go to the casino all the time. Got into MDing and now I do that instead of the casino. Some of us just have addictive personalities. I work at home, no boss to speak of, and it can be very difficult to concentrate when I know I can just get up and go out metal detecting instead. So I set a goal for myself and try very hard to be self disciplined to at least attempt to acheive the goal.

it beats the heck out of golfing, and cheaper.

My girlfriend is glad I metal detect. I seem more relaxed, and I don’t waste money golfing anymore. What a waste of time and money that was.

Re: MD'ing is wrecking my career!

Believe it or not, but MD'ng helped me make the critical decision last February of whether to keep slaving at my stressful govt job...........or to retire, and redefine my life by MD'ng. Since 9/11, I had lived an extremely stressful life that cost me 4 heart attacks and a quadruple bypass. Now, I can feel the calmness in my life........as I swing my detector. I enjoy each day..............and isn't that what Life is supposed to be about?

On the other hand....here is something that a good friend of mine just sent me as he mends from his quadruple bypass: ;D

CALMNESS IN OUR LIVES

I am passing this on to you because it definitely works, and we could all
use a little more calmness in our lives. By following simple advice heard on
the Dr. Phil show, you too can find inner peace. Dr. Phil proclaimed, "The
way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and
have never finished."

So, I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't
finished, and tonight, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of White
Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, a bottle of Kahlua, a package
of Oreos, the remainder of my old Prozac prescription, the rest of the
cheesecake, some Doritos and a box of chocolates.

You have no idea how freaking good I feel. Please pass this on to those
whom you think might be in need of inner peace.

Re: MD'ing is wrecking my career!

I know EXACTLY how you're feeling. . . it's almost like an obsessive-compulsive thing that you can't get out of your mind. . . you feel it's your MISSION to find every possible coin and ring that every aunt Emma lost at the park 100-years ago. After joining TNet and reading a lot of member posts, I've gained a lot of valuable insights from some extremely intelligent and wonderful people. Lately, (it's taken several months for me) it has become more challenging—and rewarding—to effectively research a potential site for it's cultural/historic value than for it's monetary rewards beneath (please, don't read Nightstalker's story, it'll screw everything up I'm saying). This is a phase we all go through, it takes time. . . occupy yourself in the evening with RESEARCH, and when it's time to hit the fields, you'll be ready to not be disappointed.

Take care,
watercolor

Mel,

That came just in time. I had a friend who had to make a difficult decision to resign from her position today. I have sent this to her to let her know it is time to slow down and live life to fullest.
