Metal Bird Conservation Leg Band

It's been a little while since I've gotten out in the field with my Nox 800. Found a mixed bag of items today including my first aluminum bird leg band. It was two inches deep in the forest floor near some wetlands. It reads: AVISE BIRD BAND, WRITE WASHINGTON DC USA, 1437-52777.

Nice find. One of my favorite modern finds. With all the waterfowl around here you would think Id have found more.

I discovered the USGS Bird Banding Site and entered the information. The band belonged to a female American Black Duck hatched in 1990, banded on 8-30-90, from Quebec, and deceased on the eastern tip of Long Island, NY. Metal detectorists again contributing to science and history. Fun.

This thread reminded me that I may have found one also. I'll have to look for it because I forgot to empty my pouch after my last hunt. Great info on where to look it up if I did find one.

I found one in the early 70's and sent it in to Washington, DC. It was on a Grackle that was banded in Milwaukee, WI. I got a nice printed certificate for sending in the band. Still have it around here somewhere. Gary

Well now I have to dig mine out and take a look . I always thought they were from poultry taken into the woods by a fox.
That's really neat you can get the history of the band and bird like that. thanks for sharing.

Bird bands are neat finds. I have found 2 Goose, 1 Duck, and 1 Pigeon band. If you write to the address ( or Google them these days ) they will send you the information on where and when the bird was banded, which will tell you how old the band is. Some of them in Illinois, are even "reward" bands in the amount of $50.00 and $100.00 to encourage the finder or hunter to call the band in so they can track their info on it. Nice find.
