✅ SOLVED Metal caps?? Need help..

I keep digging these metal caps in and around the area where the National Guard guys from 1914 camped. I have found several and have no clue what they are. Having a hard time finding a picture of what it could be. The little piece of black stuff usually doesn't last long when unearthed, but this one stayed together and didn't break apart when I wet it. Hopefully one of you guys have seen these.

Might be a weather proof switch cover.

looks like a faucet tip aerator with a rubber back flow in it .

this one does nto look exactly the same and does not have a back flow tab in it but i think you can see the resemblance .

It is a cap from a 1903 Springfield rifle cleaning kit.

I have searched over a year and you guys find this in less than an hour. Holy moly! It makes perfect sense, because I have found every piece in that picture except the tube everything comes in. Thank you guys for solving this one !!!!

I think taz42o nailed it. Many pieces of comm gear and the like had covers like that to close up unused cable connections and things like that. They had a gasket inside which would dry out and break up in the ground. The space between the knurled area and the threads would have a ring and light chain attached to the equipment.

Note to self next time refresh before posting. Nice job guys
