Meteorite in central NC?

A few years ago I was told by a friend of mine about a local farmer who had a meteorite fall in one of his corn fields three or four years prior.

I hear stories like that often so I didn't really believe him but since we were close by and I had time to kill we went out and started looking around.

After about an hour of wandering up and down rows of corn I got a hit on my metal detector and eventually dug up a 9 pound charcoal black rock. Over the next two days I found 14 more rocks. Most were very small, no more than a few ounces and came in an area over about 30 square feet.

My rocks appear to have been heated up quite a bit, and the biggest one has some kind of layering as if it cooled off very unevenly. They are not magnetic but will set off a metal detector. They are extremely heavy and mostly jagged looking.

Ive checked into the history of the area and there was never an iron mine or iron foundry nearby.

Is there someone who can look at this and tell me definitively what I have?

BTW the farmer made the mistake of telling some people about his meteorite field and found 40 people tearing up his freshly planted cotton field and has since banned anyone from looking for meteorites on his property.

sure, send a fragment, 1 gram or so to:

Don Stimpson
Kansas Meteorite Museum and Nature Center
21255 Street K
Haviland, Kansas 67059

it only takes a few minutes to determine if it is a metal containing meteorite by physical examination and a test for nickel. analysis and listing in the meteoritical bulletin can take a year or longer.
our web page: http://www.kansasmeteorite.com

our old web page has some id info on pallasites, most of it applies to irons too: http://www.giantcomm.net/~distimpson

hope you have a winner! best wishes, don

hey cappy, my friend's daughter was kind enough to do some meteorite modeling for our museum efforts. the family has been visiting us for about 13 years and we have seen her grow from a little girl and now becoming a young lady. the picture is her reflection in a cut and polished (not etched) brenham iron.

i keep saying that when she is famous i'll be able to tell my compadres in the nursing home, "i knew her when..." (insert old guy in wheel chair smiley here) don
