Today I drove to a couple of road reconstruction sites within about 100 miles from home. Having very little to show for my efforts, I decided to come home early and check out a spot downtown where there was a one block long section of sidewalk removed.
Getting a fairly good signal, I pushed my trowel into the soft sand beneath the sidewalk. Below the sand was nice wet black dirt layer. After pulling out a couple clumps of dirt, I ran the coil over one of the clumps and got a loud signal. I picked up the clump and could see the reeded edge of a silver coin. (first coin pic.) I slowly pulled the coin from the clump of dirt, (second coin pic.), and wiped off the dirt to reveal an 1876 Seated Liberty dime (third coin pic.)
The last pic shows a 1900 Indian Head cent as it lay in the dirt.
