As I posted the other day here -->http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/coins/328971-mini-collection.html, earlier this week my dad gave me the coins he had saved since he was a child. I've since asked him about the gold Morgan dollars, and he said that they were left over from his grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary, which happened when he was 10 or 11. Apparently someone gave them a money tree, which consisted of 50 silver dollars painted gold. He got a few of them after his grandparents passed.

As requested, I've got a bunch of pictures, including a coin book from 1964. Lots of interesting tidbits there! I've got several shots of inside pages - hard to believe some of the coin values back then if you weren't alive at the time.

Couple of Barber quarters:

4 Barber dimes. As noted in my earlier post, the one on the right is a 1901-S.

A 1943 zinc that I forgot to include in the wheat pics...

Here's the 3 foreign coins - a 1955 South African 1/4 Penny, the incredibly tiny silver 1/10 Gulden from Curacao, and the 1938 Canadian cent:

A couple of red seal 2 dollar bills, and a blue seal silver certificate. All 3 appear to be uncirculated:

Oddly enough, I may have given this off center Lincoln cent to my dad, as I used to work for the coin & currency section of a local bank, and found dozens of these:

This appears to be a Japanese war medal that was converted to a pendant or necklace. My wife, who is Chinese, was able to make out some of the writing, which appeared to commemorate a battle, presumably during World War II.

...and lastly the coin collecting price guide. As you can see, it's circa 1964:

Various prices:

Did you know that 1964 Kennedy proof sets which originally sold for less than $3 now cost $12? :laughing7:

In case you want to order some more booklets. Personally, I like "Ten Ways to Beat the Races"

Again, not the most exciting collection, but very special to me none the less.

That's a very nice collection!

I would've loved to get in on the ground floor of those cheap coins!

$90 for a 1909-S VDB??
$2 for a 1916-S Walking Liberty Half??

I need a time machine! :) That's really cool! Thanks for sharing, FT!

(There was a book on how to gain weight!? So weird...) :laughing7:

Wow what an amazing collection. Your "not the most exciting collection" is far from the truth my good Sir. It's exciting, riviting and a blast from the past. Feel proud that you own these time momentos and give your papa an extra hug from us here a T'Net.

I really don't see how you can keep up with all the things about foreign coins... I get confused just trying to remember which Canadian coins are silver!

Old family coins have special memories as the folks who loved you touched them and even saved something you gave to them.

Thanks for sharing........63bkpkr

I guess I was comparing it to all the different stuff I had managed to accumulate in the last year or so. I'd probably agree with your assessment, if my co-worker hadn't brought in his collection for me to see just a few days before my dad's surprise (see http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/coin-roll-hunting/328585-80s-crh-collection-depressing.html). I spent the better part of Saturday helping him catalog it, separating the valuable coins from the junk silver, researching some of the more rare and oddball stuff. To give you an idea of the stuff that held the least value, it consisted of 41 silver Roosevelt dimes, 140 silver Washington quarters, 116 walking liberty halves, 49 Franklin halves, and 35 Morgan dollars... Still kicking myself for forgetting to bring my camera, though I'll take pictures and post them later this week.

Don't get me wrong, though, Dad gave me some nice stuff, and I truly appreciate it. I'll spend additional time cataloging and researching the individual coins, and putting them in flips. Don't think I could ever sell the gold Morgans either. Probably keep them in the family.
