Model 1840 Cavalry Saber Guard

Dug this saber guard the other day, my second from this site. Looks like the plows have had their way with it. Or, it may have been damaged in use and replaced. These sabers were largely ineffectual, from what I have gleaned from research. Only 2% of casualties during the CW being attributed to their use. The long, heavy blade earned them the nickname, "Wristbreaker".

I noticed the star marking today. Does anyone have any info on the star stamp? I have run into dead ends and chased too many red herrings trying to research it.

One relic retailer mentioned hearing that star-marked swords were supplied to JEB Stuart's men. Plenty of spurious claims abound. I'd rather hear about factual documentation than someone's third-hand story. I have seen photos of one sword noted as being rare which had a six-sided star on the guard. Still looking for the five-sided star stamped example.
