Hello all diggers out there. Hope you are all safe and trying to get our country back in shape and back to work.
Decided I’d go out to search for some pits for some upcoming digs. Found some certain possibilities in a yard dating to the early 1880s. But that’s for another time.

After searching for new pits I decided to check out what I thought was an ash pit that we skipped over on the previous digs. Figured I’d give it another poke after the rains. Maybe open it up a little then re probe. I got on site and pulled out the 6 foot probe and boom. Hit glass. I’m thinking did that rain actually make a difference, cause I probed the heck out of that before and it all felt like ash. So I decided what the heck. I’ll dig it up since it’s most likely only 5 feet deep. So I started and was down about a foot or so and I flip up some dirt and see a round disc. Could that be a coin? So I grabbed it and saw that it was a wheat cent. Cleaned it up to see that it was a 1938. The year my mom was born. Ha. This has to be a sign right.

So I’m kinda pumped and made it to the use layer. Good sign with some yellow ware chamber pot pieces. Some broken fruit jars too. It wasn’t loaded too much but a nice layer. Found numerous slick meds and a cylinder hinge mold vile. No embossing though. Darn. I was having fun though. Pulled out a three pronged fork thing and a large medicine. Still no embossing. A broken flask and a couple of pumpkin seed flasks. So I was certain I was headed in the right direction with the age.

I was nearing the back wall and bottom when I saw the base of a beer hanging in the ceiling area. I pulled it out and found that I unearthed a beer I’d never seen before here. John Kirk Bottler South Bend Ind. Sweet. A great looking pint blob beer. Finished out with a pre patent Bixby and some other slicks. My Mom was with me today looking down on me and keeping me safe and my hopes alive. Thanks Mom. Good luck out there folks. Stay safe. Jgas.
