Ive been working an old road near my home, this road has produced some great 18th and 19th century finds, plus about 2 tons of cast iron. There are so many good signals, most of which is the center of a very large chunk of iron, but one day it will be money in the bank. So im slowly eliminating the junk and getting the good stuff.

So today i figured id id work further along the road, add to my scrap pile and hopefully find something good.

Nearing the end of my hunt i got a really nice signal and out popped the nice large copper buckle. Two feet away an iffy signal, high tone surrounded by iron, BAM out popped the large lock.

This is my first lock of this type. Can anyone give me am estimate on the age. I have dug everything from late 1700s coins to Civil War 3 ringers along this road.

Im currently running the lock thru electrolysis and will be paraphine waxing it.

that buckle could be worth $500+
hopefully some of the experts will chime in - I found one when I was a kid
I saw one found on tv at a group hunt by a woman and they told her - hers might be worth that
would have been worn across the chest

That appears to be a Civil War carbine sling buckle. Very nice finds.

Riggleman, Great finds from the old road. I too believe the buckle you found just may be a Carbine Sling Buckle from the War of Northern Aggression. Great looking buckle. The lock you have I believe too will be a war period piece. I found one almost exactly like the one you found a few years back behind an old church that was used by both armies at one time or another during the war. When you begin restoration on the lock, check the lock cover. Is it brass? examine it closely with a magnifying glass. It may very well be stamped U.S. on the lock plate cover. Continued success to you on the old road.:icon_thumright:
