Happy new year! I wanted to show off my top 5 finds from 2023. Hope you enjoy!
Whiskey bottle, found by eye while metal detecting a creek near a Union winter camp.
Reconstructed Drake's Plantation Log Cabin Bitters liquor bottles, found in a Union winter camp. Although both of these were smashed pretty good, it's an incredibly rare bottle, especially in that green color. Even the reconstructions are worthy of my finds-of-the-year list, but I hope to find a whole one someday.
1856 one dollar coin, found just before the end of the year at a Civil War site in Virginia. My first and only gold coin find.
Lead Corps badge, used to identify the wearer as part of the Union 6th Corps. Although there were fancy professional badges for sale from camp merchants, this is a somewhat crude homemade badge. A very personal find. Found at Diggin' in Virginia.
CS "Baby" Britten bolt. It's a solid iron cannon projectile with a lead base band. It was imported from England on a blockade runner, and fired from a 6 pounder Blakely Rifle at the Battle of Freeman's Ford on Aug 22, 1862. Found at Diggin' in Virginia.
