IM NOT SURE WHAT IT IS. LOOKS LIKE AN OLD KNOB OF SOME SORT. HE FOUND IT ON A DOUBLE LOT WHERE AN OLD COTTAGE FROM THE THE 1800S ONCE STOOD BUT WAS DOZED DOWN. IT HAS AN EAGLE ON THE FRONT WITH SOME FLORAL AND SCROLL DESIGN. THE BACK HAS A SMALL AREA WHERE SOMETHING USED TO SCREW IN OR ON. ANY HELP ON AN ID IS APPRECIATED. THANKS AND HH, JOSH.

IT IS A LITTLE SMALLER THAN THE TOP TO A SODA CAN OR IT WOULD JUST FIT IN THE BOTTOM OF A SODA CAN. IF I CAN ILL TRY TO TAKE A PICK TO COMPARE IT TO SOMETHING. THANKS FOR THE FAST REPLY.

Could it be from an old doorknob? What's the curvature radius... like half of a sphere, or more like a doorknob?

Interesting find!

Maybe it's the outter casing of a old door chime? The kind that attaches to the wall next the door. My mother still has one in her 1865 victorian home.

I think you might be right. The blind hole in the center would be right for that.

That is exactly whaty it is. New it soon as I saw it. My grandparents house had one. It may still be there. A cousin lives in the house now.

There was a cross piece, sort of like a large wing nut, on the outside of the door attached to the shaft. You spun it with your fingers and it rang the bell.
