We were creek walking for geodes and found this. The interior concave black portion has all kinds of little marks on it where it was knapped. All of the black rock is knapped in some way, but not as finely as the interior. Is it just leftover chert, or broken? Or something else? There aren't any other rocks like this nearby - this is near lookout mountain GA so it's not natural to that mountain. Well not sure if it was ever used or not. Notice the cortex of the stone? That is the outer layer of the stone the lite color part. The piece your daughter found is called Debitage and would of been tossed away if not used as a tool. It tell a story as to what color to look for which is going to be black flint. The other day I was out in the fields looking for Debitage on purpose cause it will lead you straight to the good stuff like a trail of bread crumbs

Good idea - we'll look for other black pieces next time we go there.

small flakes is what you are looking for they can be tiny so keep your eyes peeled. If you see some follow them and look all around them in a 10 ft radius in all directions. I found my last point and some scrapers by doing that. I have to wait till winter to look again. Good luck
