Hunted in the backyard of an old couple who have lived at this house in Spanish Fort since 1960. This yard was on the Confederate Side of the position of the 7th Massachusetts Battery at the siege of Spanish fort April 1865. First time I had been in her yard, found several trash items and got a stong relic/copper/zinc sounding, kept enlarging the hole and I got that wonderful sound/feel of shovel hitting something big and steel. My Christmas came early!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hunted alittle more but had to come home and start cleaning. I see a hole after soaking and hope it was a wooden fuse or a fuse that will allows cleaning out the powder. Will keep you posted with finnished product.

Michael,
Thanks, I use the Fisher CZ-70, an older model but a relic finding dream. It does not pinpoint great, but it is hot and finds those relics. Sometimes I have to dig a little wider hole, but if a relic is there it finds it. I do not even search silver/gold/coins until I get all the relics from a site.

That 2nd picture from the bottom really gives it a sense of scale.
Be careful defusing it!

Congrats on a great find!

I have a question though, if you found it on the Confederate side wouldn't that mean that it is probably a Union cannonball? One that was fired by the Union and landed on the Confederate side.... ???

Very neat find, Conrats!
Do be careful with it. I read not too long ago about a guy that, was supposedly well experienced, had one blow up on him...
Continued Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Different situation. In that case, rust had sealed the central chamber of the shell from the elements, and water had reacted with the original powder to produce even nastier stuff--or perhaps it was a naval shell that was airtight and still live, I forget...

Nature and the elements have already defused this one, since the fuse hole is open. :)
