we call them pilated woodpeckers around here.
I saw when a few years ago standing next to a tree it was easily 18 inches tall.
They almost sound like a hammer drill when they're working.

Awesome!!...I saw one last summer here last summer when I was looking at the property where I live now. I have suet feeders out for the birds but have not seen one again. I did get a glimpse of one in the woods the other day while I was out getting firewood.
