My First Barber Coin, And Much More, Courtesy Of The "Spoon Graveyard"

Hello and Happy Tuesday!!! (Wednesday morning, if you want to get technical. ;))

I went back to the "Spoon Graveyard" again today and hit it hard, and once again it was time well spent. This place continues to give up nice relics and coins with astonishing frequency. It's the most fun I've ever had hunting a place. Goodies galore.

Here's what I bagged today:

  • 1898 Barber Dime -- My first Barber coin!!! I was very happy, to say the least. I had to tear away a huge root, and about six inches down, I saw a lovely sliver of silver. I danced a jig. ;D
  • 1909 Wheatie -- Sorry, no "S VDB" :-[
  • Lead toy horse -- I LOVE this find
  • Another nice old skeleton key
  • Two buckles/clasps -- I really "dig" the ornate one ;)
  • Another old pocketknife (third from the site)
  • Several harmonica reed fragments, as well as a nearly intact harmonica (first time I've dug one in this kind of shape)
  • Of course, two more spoons (bringing the total from this one site to 13), and a rarity -- a silver-plated dinner knife
  • A small, intact milk-glass tub of Lustre-Creme shampoo (1940s-1950s)
  • Very old tube of Vaseline (Date Unknown, but probably turn-of-the-century or older)
  • A rusted gun of some kind (real or toy?)
  • A lid with the word "Blanco" (???)
  • Misc. relics and whatsits, including a small inkwell lid; what appears to be the top of a baby's rattle; a hose nozzle; a watering can spout; some interesting lead (the big piece kinda looks like a dog's head; and more
  • What would a day MDing be without shotgun shells? ;)
  • Assorted glass and pottery, including a mason jar lid and a nice thick old blue soda/beer bottle

Well, you all told me to keep pounding until I found the old silver, and you were right. Thanks for looking, and I hope to have more to show you, soon!!!

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

You sure have a great site. I can't believe all the cool stuff coming out of it. There has to be more silver there, keep up the good work.

Thanks again. It's been nice sharing all this with you as it unfolds. So far this month-plus of 2008 has been better than my entire 2007. ;D I can't believe it either. I'm getting spoiled though! ;)

I agree with you regarding the silver. I'm definitely going to keep searching. The coin count from there so far is 1 Barber Dime, 1 Merc, 1 Flying Eagle Cent (!!!), 9 Indian Heads, and a bunch of Wheaties. I'd like to add a few Seateds to that list for sure. ;)

I'll keep you posted. Take care and talk to you soon.

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Nice finds!!!

As for the Lustre Creme Shampoo...in my newspaper archives....the earliest advertisement is 27 April 1944 through 1965. Trying to find a decent pic/drawing of the product. Most of the ads just say...it sells for $1.00. If I can find a nice pic...I'll post.

Super finds!!!!!!! Congratulations on your first barber, and you made a lot of great finds. Every time I dig a 1909 cent the first place I look is for a mint mark, then the second place I look is on the back for the VDB I've found 2 VDB's but no S mintmark yest, you just never know!

Way cool digs. It does seem that there would be more silver produced from the area? Still looking for my first barber. Keep us posted and thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the information, Annemarie! I was really happy to find this, because I've found lots of those old milk glass jars, but none with a nice lid still intact like that (well one, but it was plain). Glad you liked it too!

Thanks for the congrats. Glad you liked the digs. I hear you on the Wheat; who knows, maybe I'll find another. The coins from the site are very consistent in dates -- almost everything is late-1800s through the early 1920s.. So maybe I've got a shot!

Thanks. As for the silver, so far it's been just the one Barber dime and a 1918 Merc, but both were firsts for me, so I was happy. But there's still a fair amount of ground to cover at the site, and it's fairly wooded, so who knows what's still there. Coins have been good though -- it's also produced 9 Indians, a bunch of Wheaties, and an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent!

Good luck finding that first Barber. I can tell you, it's a thrill. Keep pounding and you'll get it.

Brendan

Thanks Jim. It really is a nice site -- I feel like I've died and gone to detecting heaven! ;) I can totally get used to it. Hopefully I'll have more goodies to show you soon!

Congrats on that dime Brendan! 1800's barber and it's in nice shape. Would I be correct in saying that for one or two microseconds you were trying to determine whether it was a merc or rosie before realizing what you were really holding?! Those things turn up when you least expect it and the first thought is merc or rosie, and to see a barber.......that is a hell of a rush and exciting!

Thanks, Ricardo. It really was exciting. I wasn't shocked it was a Barber -- I'd been pulling enough older copper to know that the old silver had to be there somewhere, but with my luck I figured it was going to be another Rosie. :) When things actually work out the way you'd hoped it's kind of a strange, but great, feeling. Now I want more!! ;)

Thanks again for the congrats,

Thanks, Buffhunter. I love the horse too. I've been specifically hoping to find some old toys at this place; last week I found half of an old lead soldier, so I was really thrilled when that horse came up in such nice shape. Kinda adds color to the spot, you know? Glad you enjoyed.

Cheers and HH,
Brendan
