I couldn't believe it when this came out of the ground today. I knew there was a possibility of finding CW artifacts on this property but I never though I would find a buckle. I can see where the back is marked W H Smith Brooklyn.

I also found some nice flat buttons today including a dandy with a zigzag design.

That's an impressive find. Thanks for sharing and congrats on the success.

Great save this needs to be back up towards the top where it is seen. You can hunt a life time and dig everything but that! Nice assortment of buttons as well.
Happy Hunting!

Congrats on the buckle! It seems that when aa person gets a totally unexpected find like this, it makes it a little more special.

Congrats to you. Hope you can make some more unexpected finds there.

Great save. Congrats

Wow what a great piece of history. Congrats in that beauty

Congratulations, there is nothing like finding your first CW buckle, hope it's not your last. Great buttons too!

Thanks for all the reply's everybody! By the way these were found on a friends property near Middletown Maryland and hopefully there is still more left to find.

I think I know your friend. What did you say his address was? Seriously, that is a fantastic find. Love all the buttons too.

While this is an awesome find for me it may not be the find of the day. My buddy found this 1803 Large Cent that has a Large Date and may have a Small Fraction, you be the judge! I posted this on the coins forum but have had no response.
According to the 2013 Red book if this is what we think it is, it may be worth $2000 or more.

Beautiful buckle! Congrats to you!! And what's a fraction?

Beautiful buckle! Congrats to you!! And what's a fraction?

Thanks! The fraction is on the reverse of the coin and is the 1/100 at the bottom. Some had small numbers some had large, also the date on the obverse (front), some were large some were small. If you have a combination of the large date and small fraction, that is the most rare for this date large cent and the value jumps from about $40 to $2000 in the minimum grading of About Good. To receive an About Good grading you only need to be able to identify the coins date and variety.

Sweet buckle,The makers mark makes it even sweeter.Congratulations!great save
