It finally warmed up enough, and dried up enough, to get outside to play with my Christmas Tesoro Cortes. I went to our local park, pulled out my detector (and manual), plugged in the headphones and off I went. I started out near a closed concession stand and a pavillion used as a food booth during our annual town fair, thinking a bit of loose change might have been dropped in that area.

It took me about 30 seconds to get totally flustered with all the beeps and messages and get out the instruction manual. I went through a few set up steps, tweaked a couple of knobs and off I went. Five minutes later I had my first find...a round pull tab. Two minutes later I had my second find...a really tiny, rusty nail.

I flipped to discriminate mode and filtered out tabs and iron and set off again. About 10 minutes later I hit paydirt...a 1991 dime just where my Tesoro said it was (with a little help from a PistolPro pinpointer...found the dime hiding in the plug, same color as the dirt).

I had several other hits that indicated silver coin, but found only rusty nails. The ID display was flipping back and forth between silver and iron, which, as I learned later on, was considered a 'junk' signal. Still, I dug to be sure.

I wandered over to the playground where I got another 'silver' indication, dug it and found another dime about 4" deep. Not as many strong iron beeps here, but still a junky area with all the tabs, etc.

My last find was a bright shiny penny laying right on top of the ground. Hey, my eyes are as good as a detector, especially after the detector sings out first.

One bright spot...my Tesoro was able to find some really fine, fragile bits of foil 3" deep. Not that I was looking for foil, but it gives me hope that I just might find the foil-backed lottery tickets in the wallet I posted about a few days ago.

All in all, a decent first outing. I'm still confused, but I will learn. But I can feel the stiffness creeping in. Hope I can still move tomorrow morning!

.....to be continued....

Great going there, the learning curve sounds nice and easy on that machine. Might try to tweak the disc to where the tiny foil bits break up a bit but a nickel still sounds good.

As you learn your machine, it'll get better for sure and your body will get used to it as well as long as you use proper form. Good luck and hope to hear of more finds from you.

It takes a fair bit of time with any detector to get really comfortable or "in tune" with it. If you hunt a lot of trashy areas, I'd suggest you pick up either the 5.75" coil or a 7" as they separate targets in the trash better than the larger coils and still give reasonable depth.
