My first gold? Maybe?

Digging around wasn't too difficult today as we got a little over an inch of rain yesterday. At a new spot I was just kicking around as I tend to do and I found a key. Then a couple of old jewelry findings. Then a few gorgeous buttons... and a metal one that looks somewhat military... then a mother of pearl (I think) thingy and then this thing.
Engraved "C.S." and in a very random shape. I have no idea if it's real gold, I can't find a marking anywhere.
But it still resembles gold, no discoloration or fading. *fingers crossed*

Can you get a better picture? It looks discolored in the above pic and my initial thought is that it's not gold or it's thinly plated.

Testing is the only way to know for sure. Older gold wasn't required to be marked, especially if it was a handcrafted item.
