Got my first ever intact pocket watch but i can't tell anything about it except that it is indeed a pocket watch. It wont open and im afraid to force it. Can anybody give me an idea as to the age of this and how to clean it better so i can maybe get it open. It looks like copper or brass to me and some fancy engravings on it. Got a cool knife, a merc and something that resembles a heart. A lot of junk that i spared you the pic of...lol.

I GOT IT OPEN!

PS, if you can get the back open you'll find the serial number. Just type that into google & you'll get the make & year

I really think it's copper or brass. One thing is for sure, it's heavy for being so small. It's just under an inch and a half in diameter.

Thanks Mick. Any ideas on how to clean it and get it open without breaking it?

If I found it I'd try soaking it in oil for a couple months, then try and open it. If it breaks you can't blame me, hell cj would use sandpaper on it lol. Great finds, are they from your church, if so (if my memory is any good) that church has been very nice to you. Good luck with your watch, there were marks on the outside bottoms on two watches we found (son & I)

They are all from the church and i couldnt be happier with all the finds i have gotten from there. Every time i go, it seems it gives me at least one good item. Good memory....hehe. I'll pass on the sandpaper idea but will try the oil. Are we talking vegetable oil or olive oil or some other kind? I looked on the bottom but it really needs a better cleaning, i can't see anything. I'm really excited to get this thing open and hopefully see a maker or something to date it or where it came from. It has some really beautiful engravings on both sides of the case. Thanks for the advice treble. :occasion14:

Hello rodarian. That is one cool watch-find. I have dug many pocket watch pieces but nothing intact and as ornate as yours. It looks silver to me too. Let us know how the cleaning goes.

BTW you may already know but the cylindrical piece next to the table knife is the handle from a razor.

Nice digs. C9

Oh my god, thank you c9. I did not know that and that is the second one of those i have found. I thought it was a piece to a curtain rod...haha. That totally makes sense that it's a razor handle. I am always learning something on this board.:occasion14: I will post the pics if and when i get it cleaned and open. I'm going to be completely honest here and that is, i have no clue what oil to use to clean or how to even go about trying to get it open. I guess i am really not sure what it's made of, the pics do make it look silver and maybe it is but to look at it in real life it has the look of that black hills gold or a light colored copper. It really is one of the smallest pocket watches i have ever seen but it is really heavy for it's size. Thanks again for the post.

That is a great idea, coily. I'm going to look into that and see if i can find a jeweler that will do that for me. I just know that i always get impatient and will end up ruining it out of frustration...heh.
