I went to my new park where I found the wheats. I wasn't disappointed. I found a 1942, 1944, 1951, and 1954 today. I also hit a jumpy 12-44 12-46. I dug down about 6 inches and out came a coin about the size of a quarter but lighter. It was very crusty, but I could tell there was some writing on it. I got home and first scrubbed it with a toothbrush and it didn't do very well. So then soaked it in hydrogen peroxide. Still didn't do much. So then I used a brass brush to finally clean off most of the crud. It turned out to be a 1935 Washington state tax token!

It was nice to find something that was tied to the depression. If the world keeps going they way it is, we may need to start minting these things again.

WHEW, I am sure glad this post is about a token instead of taking your first hit on some wacky tobacky. Nice tax token

Nice find! I wish my state still issued those. I could use a pile of them!

Thanks! I was told that you don't want to use anything strong as it will eat the token too. The fine brass brush took some time, but the results turned out well.

Vinegar is a mild acid, have had no issues using it. I bought a cheap battery operation denture sonic cleaner that I put the tokens and vinegar in and run it for about 30-40 minutes. The sonic cleaner cost about 6 bucks at the drug store. I also use a soft wire brush when necessary.

Thanks for the info. If I am ever lucky enough to find another token, I will have to try your method.

All my tokens come from private properties, I don't remember ever digging on on public lands.
