My log mark collection

Log marks were used by lumbermen to identify the trees that they cut down. It was their way of getting paid when logs went to the mill. Logmarks had a long handle that they would swing against the end of the log several times thus marking the log as theirs. Unscrupulous lumbermen would cut someone elses mark off logs and brand it with their own mark.
The rusty mark in the 3rd photo is typical rusty as they come from the ground. I have found all of these except one, which was given to me.

Cool collection. I've seen the marks on logs, but never before saw the "branding irons." Interesting stuff, thanks.
