Went to a new site today, in Massachusetts, in the woods near a cemetery that was not used since the 1700's, more importantly there was some kind of a meeting house there in the 1600's. I hunted in those woods near some stonewalls for less than an hour when I got a deep signal, I stuck the pinpointer in the hole and grabbed a round disk with 1/4 of crud caked on to it, I checked next to the hole and found another one, I checked again and a few inches away from my first hole I dug and found another one. The were buried under pine trees and and needles which break down into a kind of acid which ruins coins. Anyways, I'm pretty sure that these are 1600's coins, considering how crude they are. I can see faint parts of design on them but not enough to ID them. They are pretty toasted from the acidic pine needles.

On the coin with the little triangle cut out of it I can see a worn bust, looks maybe like Charles.

That would be a cool hunt to be on. I would let my imagination run wild with what could be found on that old property. Congrats!

I completely know what you mean, I hate it when I have a toasted disk that I can't ID. In some cases it could be a one of a kind copper or just a KG, you just will never know even though at some point it had a design and even a date. I do not know what is worse, a completely blank copper or one that has just enough design to give you false hope you can identify it, but still not enough to know what it is.

I will definitely be back there and to many other sites right around that site quite a few times. Plenty of woods and celler holes.

The ground under the pines isn't kind to those coppers. I've dug lots of early 1800 coinage that has been in around pine trees non have been burnt like those that you've dug, so it must be also the soils of the area that has the effect, or combination of the two. Where there's coppers there could be silver, so best of luck on the return hunts.

Maybe I'm seeing things but a 65 seems visible. The 5 seems particularly clear. Also, if it is a 654 of the date, it seems to be punched like a counter stamp all the way around.

I have it in olive oil which brings out details, I will look at it and post photos.

Thanks for the photos.

It's rough finding coins that can't be identified. I have a pile of disks in my basement that I know are all old coppers worn smooth. Best of luck finding out what they are!
