Folks,
I hit a rest stop along a major highway and with the permission of the attendant detected for a short while in the woods near the picnic tables. Some of the trees were about two feet in diameter but the facility was very new and modern. I'm not sure what was there before but something old had to be. My main find compensated for the two dozen pulltabs I dug...an 1866 shield nickel. It has great detail. Unfortunately my camera doesn't have a good macro setting so I had to scan the pictures in with my printer. My first shield nickel and oldest coin at two inches deep, four feet from a modern picnic table. Also found some clad. I'll be heading back when I have the chance.
Peace,
T-man

Great dig. I like the coins with the rays. They only minted three other varieties seated half, quarter and the shield nickle

Great find T-man, there's nothing finer than getting your oldest anything :icon_thumleft:. For a long time I tried to find the best way to photo/scan coins to show the best detail. After many experiments I found that oblique lighting showed up enough detail for the camera to pick up and be able to post a good picture. For me, this meant lighting the coin from one of it's side views with a fairly strong LED flash light (torch). If you see my last post you can see the effect and consequent shadows http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,308835.0.html . I hope this works for you as your coin is worthy :icon_thumleft:.

That is a very nice shield nickel... they usually don't come out that nice from what I've seen. At only 2 inces! wow! amazing....congrats on your oldest to date, and good luck going back.
