My oldest colonial silver yet & a diamond ring.

I have been working holes in the water and have been doing very well. There is so much junk that I turned my detector off and set it aside. I have been pulling the big rocks out and fanning the smaller stones and silt out of the way. The heavy stuff stays on the bottom. I grab a handfull and search that way. I found my oldest silver yet and a diamond ring. There is one diamond missing on the one side. The other finds include - sterling button, flat buttons, indians, wheats, memorial cents, nails, sinkers, lures, big iron junk, 2 axe heads, hatchet head and a ton of bits of wire and other metal. I will post pics of the other finds later. The ring is the second gold of the year. The silver coin 1739 is my oldest yet and I couldn't be happier. I hope one of you hunters can tell me what it is. The water levels keep going down and I will be swimming all week. Thanks for looking! DD.

1739!?!?!!!!! SWEET!

The writing looks too large, compared to the rest of the coin, to be a Spanish pillar dollar. Could you post another photo with comparison to a modern quarter for scale?

sweet coin love to have one
This silver coin is a little bigger than a dime. Here in central Pa. the river and creek bottoms have shale or slate bottoms. They are smooth, flat and run in layers. I have been hunting areas where stuff naturally collects. Most of these areas are full of rocks and silt. I remove the big rocks and fan the silt and the heavy items stay there. The next time I go out I will take a pic and you folks will see what I'm talking about. It's pretty easy digging and a good way to keep cool. DD.

Attn: DiggerDave

So if silver is about the size of a dime, it could be a reale or more likely a half-reale. Is the coin very thin?

As for where you're searching, these are natural gold traps as well. Should trap almost anything heavier than typical rock in your area. Excellent idea, btw.

Do you have to use diving gear or is the depth shallow to where you can just use a mask/snorkel?
