I am curious to see if anyone can help me solve the mystery of this item I purchased on eBay a while back.
The seller did not know what is was, and I only bid on it because I thought it may be a Civil War button or coin.
It's about 7/8 of an inch wide, and the thickness varies from 2 mm to 3.5 mm. It appears to have the letters U S
on one side; the other side appears blank to me. I don't know the material it's made from, but it seems heavy for
it's size. It weighs 9.7 grams or .34 ounces. I'd like to think it was gold, but it's probably brass.

I've attached photos of the item. Hope someone can let me know what I have. Thanks!

I could be wrong... but my immediate thought on seeing it was that it is upside down and is actually a letter M. Like a Byzantine follis coin -

I think what you may have is a Civil War period bridle bit rosette. It appears the attachment points were ground off and it was beaten with a hammer a little bit. http://sgtriker.com/images/sp4595.jpg
