thanks, i'll check them out. the area in Ct. where this was found had a trading post nearby in the mid 1600's. Not sure which europeans were trading in this area at that point, know the dutch named an island not far off the Ct./RI coast

It looks like a carved stone meerschaum pipe, probably not super old by our standards (1730-1830) but still very collectable. A lot of those are from Turkey and other exotic locations, the word is German and many were traded through Germany.

Check out the meerschaum stone pipes, it's a very light stone that feels like clay. Plus the bearded dude with a hat is the most popular type, google it and you'll find hundreds if not thousands like yours and entire forums dedicated to them.
