Neat find for the day

I spent a few hours today hunting in a soon to be park that's been bulldozed. Coins were sparse, I did find a few clad and a 1919 wheatback. I got a big signal that I dug for and came up with a lead (I think) ship at about 7 inches. It looks like a part of the bow has been broken off, but I like the find a lot. I have a thing for sailing ships anyway. I'm going to give it a light coat of flat black paint and display it somewhere around the house. I don't have any idea how old/new this might be, but there are no man. marks or dates of any kind. It's pretty heavy, it might have been half of a book end. Anyway, I thought it was neat enough to post a picture. Happy hunting.

It's not everyday that someone finds a spanish galleon with their metal detector. Now that's something to brag about! Maybe you should enter it in WET best finds - 2004. LOL

Fueller, My dad had a set of those book ends from when he was a kid in the 1920's or early 1930's. It was supposed to be the Santa Maria. Nice find, and I agree, don't paint it, it looks great the way it is....Lance

Thanks for the replies everyone. I did not paint the ship. Better judgement prevailed. I'm happy to know the approximate age now, and I'll consider it a replica of the Santa Maria. That area did not produce much else, howerer as mentioned in the post I did find a 1910 wheatback not too far away, so maybe I'll give it another go. There's always something else in the ground if you look hard enough.

Happy hunting

You can clean coins with a dremal tool or any small rotory tool you a soft wire brush bit for it,It should work good on crusted and blackend coins and other finds
