Hey there! Recently found this axe head in yard of old farmhouse in Ohio. Used electrolysis to remove a lot of sediment and rocks attached. Any idea of the period? It weighs 4 lbs. Thanks!

it's a blacksmith made ax head. I found one 10" deep and it dates to the clearing of the land 200 years ago. Mine has a similar failure in that it was not properly forge welded. Frank

Wow, thanks for the info! Mine was about 9 inches deep..thought it was a rock at first because it was orange. The house on this property is 109 yrs old..was once part of a farm..all barns and outbuildings gone now. Nice pic!

Thanks Lorie. I soaked it in water for a week, wire brushing it daily, Then I baked it dry in the oven with the heat set low. I then gave it a couple of coats of Rustoleum rust killing primer followed by several coats of flat black. I then mounted it in a black walnut plack I made from 40 year old wood that I had harvested. It has a brass coated steel pin in the side to hold it.

We baked ours too after removing the rust. I just coated it with linseed oil after that. Nice job on the mounting!
