I found this today in a field in Hertford County, NC. There use to be an old plantation there, not sure of the dates but the foundation of the house could be seen about 4 feet down in a deep ditch along the side of the road. After a little bit of water, the area where the shank would have been is very bright silver. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert but just guessing Late 18th early 19th century flat button?
Nice find, still with traces of gilt on it!

Gold gilt flat button with a "plated" backmark. Typically 1820-1840s.

Thank you all for the infomration, looks like I am on a good spot. I found a couple of smaller ones (forgot to mention this one is about the size of a quarter) last night that have similar markings. Happy hunting!
