No pontil there. Smooth base, tooled lip, most likely 1885 - 1900. Not sure of origin, rarity, or value though, sorry man.

Beautiful bottle!

I have Matthew Knapp's medicine bottle book but not sure where it is right now, being a later machine made bottle and not embossed as one of their patent medicines my guess would be $10-20 if you could find a buyer...

As NJ said, it's not pontiled. Grinding of pontils only took place if the pontil mark interfered with the bottle standing, usually on early flasks. Grinding and polishing pontil marks was reserved for more expensive tableware like decanters where the scar was considered unsightly. It was a time consuming process that would never be spent on utilitarian bottles. I don't think people realize just how fast the blowers were turning out everyday bottles like medicines and sodas. They'd pitch it back into the pot before they'd spend time trying to clean up the base.

Nice med by the way, man.

It's a nice med, but nobody would polish a pontil on a med, the blowers and gaffers got paid by the piece and doing what you suggest would be useless and take way too much time. The fact it's a tooled top bottle is a dead giveaway regarding the era it was made. Your research is simple wrong, sorry if that doesn't sit well with you, but the correct attribution in this hobby is key. Misinformation is a major problem in any hobby when it comes to antiques, you thinking and saying it's pontiled is just spreading incorrect info....

Some of the older varieties of Mrs. Mettlers. Including Dysentary Cordial, Nuetralizing mixture and Restorative Syrups were all open pontil. $170-$450 for those. But no plain Mrs. Mettlers Medicines listed. This is clearly a post civil war med. smooth base. Doesn’t appear to be hinge mold that would be 1870s range. So yes, I concur it being mid 80s 1900 range. I would see it going for $20-$50. Just my thoughts. Jgas
