I've used several models of Tesoro over the years. I've found them to be dependable, and the service excellent , I have the Golden & Silver miro max series, plus the older versions. I would say YES as first detector. There are other lower budget detectors , but Tesoro are user friendly.

I love my Cibola, and will probably never part with it. It is simple to set-up, light and easy to understand, and I can pinpoint exactly on top of the coin with it.

good choice, you can upgrade in the future and still keep it as a great back-up detector

I currently have a silver umax and the cibola is a step up. From what I have seen from the silver umax, I don't think you will disappointed in way with the cibola.
