Hello everyone. I am new to metal detecting and new to this forum. I recently got the MD bug and have been researching which detector to get for the last couple of days. We live right on the ocean and would like to see if we can find anything on the beaches around here (Westport, WA). I may be posting some questions as I continue to look at detectors online and narrow down my search. We'd also be interested in meeting others into the hobby in our area, however I don't know how popular it is around here. With all the time we've spent at the beach, in the parks and outdoors in general, we've only seen one person using a metal detector.

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick replies. It seems this hobby and this forum in particular are very friendly. I have a lot of other hobbies that are not quite that way - people arguing and fighting instead of being friendly and trying to help others. Glad this is a different experience. Thanks!

Hi, I'm a former Seattle-ite and detected in that area 1982-85 or so. I suggest you check out the above links and team up with a club or member and share knowledge and adventures. I never did any good on the beaches as there just isn't the traffic/activity flow as in Florida or California.

You may be able to purchase an excellent used detector from a member of the above clubs, or here on this forum!

Good luck.

Is it safe to say this hobby is addicting? I can see myself diving full in and not coming up for air anytime soon! I've already been there with ham radio, astronomy, geocaching, archery, motorcycles, etc. etc. etc...

Thanks again.

Yep, this hobby is addictive and contagious. In 1982 I brought a Garrett Deepseeker ADS to WV during a visit from Seattle....my Dad, Mother, and brother in turn became life long addicts to the beep of the sweep!

"beep of the sweep" that's funny, I like it. I might have to steal that saying sometime. Thanks for the warm welcomes. Now I just have to pick a machine and get started. I'm leaning toward the Fisher units - F2, F4 or F5. I'm probably going to post some questions on the usefulness of advanced features for a newbie. I also don't know if I'll have continued interest in the hobby, but I think I may already be hooked.
