Hey everyone! With school out for the week, I was surfing treasurenet for a while, and came across this section. I must have read every single post on the first page, and I was fascinated with this! So, I went out yesterday and today to the bank, and got myself 33 rolls of nickels and three rolls of half dollars. I was so excited to go through them, that I was barely home when I started opening them.
I went through them all, and found 45 pre-1964 nickels, and a 1969 D Half dollar. I wasn't too sure if I should have kept nickels from 1960-1963, but I figured it wouldn't hurt. The oldest nickel that I found was a 18?? V Nickel which has seen much better days, since it is almost totally obliterated and is very smooth. But hey, what are the chances of even finding one period?
So, here are the some pictures of what I found. In the first picture, the half, the v nickel, and the war nickel are on the top, along with three 1939 nickels. The next group are all from the 1940's, the third group is from the 1950's, and the last group on the bottom are all 1960-1963 nickels.
So, I just wanted to thank you all for making your post so interesting, because I probably never would have done this if it wasn't for going on this forum! If any of you have suggestions for other things for me to look out for in rolls of nickels, halves, or even pennies, please post! I'm new at this, and I don't feel like having a rare coin slip through my finger tips back into the roll! Hope you all enjoy this post as much as I enjoyed all of yours! Happy holidays everyone!

Congrats on your successful first attempt and welcome.

On the V-Nickel, check the back if the word "CENTS" does not appear at the bottom below the "V", it is from 1883. As far as the odds of finding a V-Nickel, for me it has been about 1 in every 92500 (I've found 3 so far.)

As far as what to keep, I generally save the following:

For pennies
-----------
Wheat pennies and before
* Keep all

Memorial pennies
* Save any die varieties found (commonly known varieties exist for 1969-S, 1970-S, 1972, 1983, 1984, 1992-D, 1995, 1998, 1999, and 2000).
* Though I am not sure how many others save these, I also keep the low mintage varieties and the first couple of years of issue, which includes:
*** everything pre-1961
*** Philadelphia minted 1961, 1962, 1963, and sometimes 1969
*** All San Francisco minted coins
*** Others if their condition warrants it.

For nickels
----------
Pre-Jefferson (Buffalo, V-Nickels, etc)
* Keep all

Jefferson
* Keep all 1942-1945 war nickels.
* Save any die varieties found (commonly known varieties exist for 1939, 1942-D, 1943-P, 1945-P, 1949-D, 1954-S, 1955-D, and I have heard there is one on the 2005 buffalo).
* Keep all key and semi-key dates (listed in order of rarity): 1950-D, 1939-D, 1938-S, 1938-D, 1939-S, 1951-S, 1955, 1949-S, 1950
* Any San Francisco minted coins after 1970.
* I actually keep all pre-1960 as well as a few of the lower mintage varieties afterward such as:
*** Philadelphia minted 1960, 1961, 1962, and sometimes 1967 or 1971.
*** 1968-D, 1968-S, 1969-S

For Dimes
---------
* Save all pre-1965 dimes.
* Save all West Point and San Francisco minted coins.
* Save any die varieties found (commonly known varieties exist for 1982 (no mintmark)).

For Quarters
------------
* Save all pre-1965 quarters.
* Save any San Francisco minted coins.
* Save any die varieties found.

For Half Dollars
------------
* Save all pre-1971 half dollars.
* Save any San Francisco minted coins.
* Save any die varieties found (commonly known varieties exist for 1974-D)
* Save any dated 2002-current.

Dollars
------
* Save all large dollars (Eisenhowers and before)
* Any Susan B Anthony dollars dated 1981.
* Save any die varieties found
* Save any Sacagawea dollars dated 2002(I think)-current. Start with whichever year they quit making them for circulation.

Other
-----
* Any other US coin type not listed above, if you can find one.
* Optionally foreign coins, depending on your preference.

Well that's roughly what I look for, but sometimes other interesting things show up that I decide to keep as well.
As far as searching for die varieties, I just listed what is listed in the 2006 Red Book, many other varieties exist as well.

Good luck in the future and keep us posted.

Wow! Yeah, that's amazing for a first find. My oldest is a 1909 wheat...I invited a friend to do it once, after just a few rolls of pennies he comes across a 1905 IH..... Beginner's luck didn't take to me I guess. Great job!! ;D

Thanks everyone for the tips and input! I can't wait until the banks open again, because I think I'll order my first box of nickels and half dollars. I just love the idea of being able to find a great coin right in circulation! Happy holidays everybody!
