Hello all, just wanted to say you guys have an awesome forum, very informative to people like me that haven't been detecting very long. I have been checking in for a couple of years now, and finally decided to join.

I live in south central Pennsylvania, about 8 miles from the MD state line. I mostly try to find colonial places, but in my travels I have found some civil war relics, mostly by accident, as only one item was found in a spot that we knew could have civil war history.

I have only really been detecting since January of this year, a friend from work took me under his wing and is teaching me alot. I purchased a Equinox 600, and a couple of different coils and they seem to be working well for me. Here are some of my civil war finds. I know what everything is except the stars and stripes shield pin, not even sure if it is civil war Era, it was found 10 feet from the artillery button.

Excellent congratulations a good start

Welcome to the group from North Carolina. Nice finds and I hope you have many more.

That is all nice stuff. It would be helpful to see a picture of the reverse of your shield shaped object, that might help to date it and discern a function. The patriotic themed items are certainly not limited to the Civil War era. There were plenty of periods since the founding of the nation that the patriotic fervor was running high.

That artillery button with the gilt might benefit from some judicious cleaning, but don;t be in a hurry to do it. Watch some videos, practice on some lesser finds and then see what feels right.

VERY NICE !

I been detecting for 25 years off & on & still have never dug a Breast Plate .

The ' Stars and Stripes ' piece looks familiar and IMO if found with other civil war relics if most likely is one as well .
