Today I decided to take a trip to the bank and buy a box of nickels.
In a whole box I found: 1.45 pounds of pure .999 nickel.
Now here are the goodies sorted right away:
12 sided nickels: 1957(2), 1960, 1961, 1962
2 centennial rabbit nickels
1964,1976 nickels in a good shape
1989, 1997, 1998 nicely toned cu-ni nickel
1991 semi key date
1962 Jefferson (saving all pre 1970, except of 1964 ;D)
1987P and 1988P: both in gem condition
Also found a coin from Haiti (goes to the international coins jar)
Enjoy the pictures and happy hunting :)

nice finds. I wish the US had made nickel nickels so we here in the US could hoard old nickels for their nickel value like we can hoard copper cents for their copper value. But they might be changing the comp. of modern day nickels someday soon so all the nickels minted so far will be hoarded like copper cents are - esp when pm prices start to rise again.

Cool box. Interesting haitian coin, I have yet to get one of those in a nickel roll.

I have an international foreign coin bag as well, mostly canadian pennies and nickels.

p.s. got a 1951 canadian penny in my penny box earlier.

Have a wonderful christmas!

I don't think the US mint will make nickel nickels - metal value going over face value case, alike with silver coinage. Unless the mint decides to reduce the weight of a nickel coin down to 2 grams, that is not going to happen. In case of the goodies that can be found in pocket change, in Canada we don't have any silver war nickels :(. The ones issued during WW2 were tombac. Never found one yet though.
Merry Christmas everybody. I wish everyone to reach their crh goals for 2012. :icon_thumright:

sorry - what I meant was I think US nickels will probably be changed to an even cheaper composition (zinc or steel) than they are now because even the current comp. of 75% copper & 25% nickel will likely soon be worth much more than $.05 again (currently worth $.0515). I just wish the US had made 99% nickels in the past like Canada used to. But at least the US made silver nickels so those are obviously great to find - when you can find 'em. :)

I think US can change 75% copper/25% nickel to a nickel plated steel, like Canada did back in 2000. But then what happens is all coin sorting machines will have to give up the installed magnets, so that new steel nickels would not be rejected as foreign.
