Re: Nickels: 1959 & below, what's the story

The story is one part holding on to the past and one part speculation.

The metal content is the same - no melt value advantage.
The mintage figures aren't particularly low ('cept for 1950D) so that isn't the cause of "rarity."

The value/rarity comes from the fact that the mean life expectancy of a circulating US nickel is on the order of about 30yr. So, there are fewer circulating early date nickels than modern date nickels.

one I'd love to see in the plug, the other I'm sick of seeing in the plug! :)

:icon_thumright: jk. metal content I'm sure the older stuff was more copper - just like the older nickel was more nickel...been posts about this on survivalblog - JWR suggests you keep all older nickels as soon they will be just like pre-64 silver and pulled out of circulation just like the silver was removed due to it's value. speculation? idk sounds like logic to me, the more value something has the more people want to keep it.

i find the no mint mark pre 65 nickles all the time, the uncommons for me seem to be the D mint marks or S mint marks in certain years, maybe it is because im in the east and dont see them.

I am in the east as well, I tend to get a 1:1 ratio of philly:denver nickels(older dates), sometimes, denver is more common than philly.
My ratio is about 1 san fransisco mintmark to 15-20 philly or denver nickels. :dontknow:

Nickels have always been 75% copper and 25% nickel.
