Accoding to the book "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, your button was manufactured by Firmin & Sons in 1855. Because that date preceded the civil war by 6 years, apparent intended usage was North Carolina State Militia officers... but these very rare buttons quite probably went to war on NC State Troops Confederate uniforms. Your button is very valuable -- I advise against any attempt to clean it beyond how it already looks.
