not TODAY'S finds, but from our last hunt

Well, got new TNET member BEZJO out to scope out possible virgin territory and boy are we stoked! Old farmhouse property, on private/posted land that we have permission to poke holes on. We didn't spend nearly the time there that we had wanted as the rain was coming in and it was cooooooold! But we got a chance to walk the edges of the property and tried our best to get an idea of the lay of the land, or what it use to be. And boy does this new spot seem promising, although, we need to sort through the garbage first, as always. We found this extremely decayed indian head with a very rough patina. It was in a wash out deposit, probably from one of our recent flash floods. And of course, we had to toss in our naked ladies that we found as well :p looks to be from a cast iron clock, still trying to find a picture of one somewhere. But the big "all day" hunt will be tomorrow...wish us luck!

Yea I'm pretty darn sure. It is definitely copper and you can discern most of the feathers of the headdress on the obv side and the ONE CENT on the rev side, especially after a good oil soaking. But it is rough. Got to love the conditions here in upstate NY, its a rare occasion to pull a pretty copper out of the ground :(

Re: not TODAY'S finds, but from our last hunt...UPDATED

So yea, went out with BEZJO today and hunted for a few hours. What a cool spot!!! Not much in the form of coins or jewelery, but some really neat relics! I'll spare you all of the rust pictures, as there were loads. Lots of old brass in the ground, have a few bells and parts soaking right no. But found this cool gold plated spoon marked "1WALDOHE" aka RIALTO by Holmes & Edwards. I know its not a HUGE find but I tell you what, I really enjoy finding these neat little things on old homesteads like this one. BEZJO found a nice wheatie, not sure of the year but had a nice undisturbed patina with full detail, a rarity here in ny :) Beginners luck!!!

That's no IH cent. That's a nickel 3 cent piece!

Where's the pointy feathers if it is an IH? :D

If it has words on the back, it may be a token or store card, but right off I don't remember any store cards that had that same Liberty bust as the 3c.

Re: not TODAY'S finds, but from our last hunt

You really think it looks like a 3 cent? Its the same size as a small cent, same thickness, and has the same patina that the coppers have that come out of the ground here. It's obviously not silver, and I would think the nickle varieties of a 3 cent piece would come out looking more like the buffalo nickles we find here.....but I could be wrong, have never found a 3 cent-er :)

Some more pictures of the coin that might show a little better. Sorry about the pictures but its hard to take a picture showing detail when the coin is so beat up. First 2 pictures are front, last picture is the reverse side.

Place it over top of an IH cent. The 3c nickel is 14mm in diameter. The IH will be 19mm (slightly larger). Also, your detector should read it lower than an IH cent if you have a metered or ID detector.

I am certain that's a 3cent.

And it's a great find!

Hats off to buckleboy. You were right about the coin and I was wrong, it is indeed a copper-nickle 3 cent piece! Which is a first for me! And super cool to be the first coin pulled from our new hunting grounds which hopefully has more goodies instore! And now we also are more informed on 3 cent pieces! Thank you!

Bravo! That's a much harder coin to find than an IH cent--in Any condition.

:)

Cheers,
