Ok I am pretty jazzed. I have dug alot of relics overseas and a few CW bullets and what not here in the states but today I found an area not far from a small battle site that gave up two buttons one dropped pistol bullet and some melted lead. These are my first CW buttons and I found them about 10 feet apart. I am not sure if it is a camp yet but my hopes are up. I also found harmonica reeds an ornate small buckle and a leaf which may be some type of uniform item or not.The only coin from the site was an IH penny from 1890.. Lots of iron also.
Also a deep whats it and other odds and ends. Some of this stuff was found at another site.An old junk watch and a 43 merc and other odds and ends. Going to keep hitting this site to try to figure it out. Maybe it is just the beginning or maybe I hit a lucky spot and found the only two buttons to be had. Thanks for looking and HH.

Update -- These buttons are post civil war. Threw me for a loop because they were found on a CW site. You just never know what you are going to dig.

Re: Civil War activity... camp?

Your finds are actually closer to Spanish American War, and the 1890 penny is a fine clue to the era of the recoveries. :)

The buttons are U.S. general service eagle buttons of the 1875-1902 pattern. The ladies buckle is a late Victorian era piece as well. The bullet is likely 20th century, as we may note the machine made serrations in the depressed groove. In all, the finds are consistent with 1880-1900 period and later. :icon_thumright:

Great looking buttons. Congrats.
I'm also seeing an old razor handle and a lipstick tube (upper left).
Looks like a fun spot you are on.

Re: Civil War activity... camp?

I found these buttons on the edge of a CW site but they could have come from a later home site that don't exist any more. That would make since because all of the iron in the ground. Worth some research. :coffee2:

Hate to say it, but the buttons are not Civil War. They are 1870's Indian War

Indian War era buttons - you can tell by the button bust as well as the backmark. I am familiar with New Bern area (if you dug them in that area) Many post war buttons have come from the area due to occupation through 1868 and a few local camps in the 1870's. Still very cool finds - I honestly have found less of those era eagle buttons than Civil War era.

Re: Civil War activity... camp?

Dan , I dug them about 60 miles from New Bern. I love they way this sandy soil has treated the buttons . They have no corrosion.
Looks like they are later buttons but I will surly not through them out. ;D
